If you don’t know who Kayla Itsines is, then here’s a little background information.  Kayla is a 24-year-old Australian fitness trainer.  She started taking personal training courses in 2008 and graduated soon after.  She began guiding clients through personal training and workouts at a women’s only gym, but she kept hearing the same goal from the women that she trained: I want a bikini body!  She decided to develop her own methods and guides to help women achieve that bikini body goal.  Her workouts became popular on Facebook and Instagram, and she soon became famous online as a fitness trainer and bikini body expert.

I personally didn’t know who Kayla Itsines was until I stumbled across her new Sweat with Kayla App.  However, she has other Bikini Body Workout Guides that are also available for purchase.

I was looking for a fun and easy way to get into great shape.  I travel a lot for work and find it hard to work out consistently.  I was looking for a workout plan that was a bit more “on the go,” and I thought an app would be perfect!  I could use it on all my mobile devices and take it with me anywhere.

Here’s some more information about the app.  This app is Kayla’s Bikini Body Guides on a mobile platform.  The app is interactive and portable and can help busy women stay healthy and fit.  You sign up for the app and subscribe to the service.  It’s a monthly fee of $19.99 that is automatically deducted from your bank account.  It should also be noted that there is a 12-week minimum for the subscription.  The app does offer a 7-day free trial, but the app does go ahead and deduct $59.97 when you sign up for the free trial.  If you decide within the 7 days that you no longer want to continue with the app subscription, then your money will be refunded.

For lovers of Kayla’s Bikini Body Guides, this app says that it offers newer Bikini Body Guides.  So those who already own the non-app version of Kayla’s Bikini Body Guides should see some new workouts and information in the app.

Features

The app is very colorful, interactive, and you get to customize your workout a bit.  Each week is a little different to help guide you through the program.  You can choose a specific area of the body for the resistance workouts, of course depending on the week.  There are LISS workouts (Low Intensity Sustained State), which are low intensity cardio workouts over a long period of time.  HIIT workouts (High Intensity Interval Training), which are high intensity workouts over short bursts of time.  There is also a rehabilitation category, which stretches out specific areas of the body.  You a certain number of workouts in each category to complete each week so your body gets a variety of activity.  Sometimes a surprise bonus challenge will pop up in your week.

The app also includes a daily menu with a supplementary grocery list.  You can track your food and calorie intake with the app.  So the app keeps you on track with both your workouts and your diet.

Pros

The app is quite attractive and is easy to use.  It’s almost like a game except you do have to work out to “win.”

Other than the initial fee, $20 a month is much easier to digest than paying $200 all at once for a non-app workout kit.  Although, I think $20 a month is a lot for an app.  Apparently a lot of users were unhappy about the price, so Kayla sent an email offer to those who had already purchased her other Bikini Body Guides to try the app.

It’s also nice to pick and choose your workouts.  There are definitely some days that I am not in the mood to work out, so I would start with a nice rehabilitation stretching session.  It would really warm up my body to prepare me for the more intense workouts.  Also there will supposedly be updates to the app that may add new workouts, so it should keep you on your toes.

Cons

A big difference between the app and the Bikini Body Guides are the guides themselves.  When you purchase the Bikini Body Guides, you apparently get to download the guides as PDFs, and you have them forever.  You pay a lot more money all at once, but then you’re not being charged $20 a month for the rest of your fitness journey.  If you cancel your subscription from the app, you lose all of the guides and cannot access them anymore.

Of course, I never purchased the Bikini Body Guides, and I feel as though I spent enough money on the monthly subscription that I’m not interested in investing in the Bikini Body Guides.  I have heard and read online that the app and the Bikini Body Guides are very similar, so if you already have the Guides, you wouldn’t get much more from subscribing to the app.  The app did boast that it included new guides and workouts, but they seem to be the same exercises just put in a different order.  Hopefully the updates show a bit more variety.

Final Thoughts

So I have been doing the Sweat with Kayla App for a little over four months now.  I definitely look fitter, and I have lost about 9 pounds.  It is nice to be able to take it on the go, but I have to admit that I’m starting to get a little bored.  I shudder to think how much money I could spend if I continue with the subscription for years to come.

Seeing how there are so many different workout options available (especially for busy women), I have been looking into options that will be cheaper in the long run.  It would be nice to have a downloadable workout guide that I can keep forever.  I will keep looking and let you all know what I find!
